Provost and Chief Diversity Officer Jay Akridge describes four themes that undergird the successful 21st century land-grant university: 1) excellence and innovation, 2) access and success, 3) affordability, and 4) a climate of respect and inclusion. The level of success in the first three areas will be heavily dependent on commitment to and progress with the fourth. Proactive steps to build a positive climate that supports the success of all are discussed. And the importance of every member of the Purdue community in creating a climate of respect and inclusion is highlighted.

Colleges and universities are facing challenges based on our evolving society—including a shifting of U.S. demographics towards racial and ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education, increasing financial challenges, and changing public expectations and understanding of the relevance of secondary education. Integrating and supporting the success of diverse individuals is facilitated by evidence-based, high-impact practices that focus on building communities of support to advance institutional priorities. Specific approaches based on facilitating progress through structured mentoring, institutional culture assessment and evaluation, and institutional transformation to support the growth and success of a broad range of individuals are highlighted.
